Regular Poem: Magic

15 Apr

it’s a sort of spell
broken if the magic words aren’t chanted
or if the fairy dust is sprinkled disproportionately

it’s a moment
and the click clicks in his eyes
when we’re undividedly focused on each other
and i could almost tell you how many seconds it will be before he says

“you a mermaid?”
it’s a hushed, gruff voice, so serious
i nod
“yes i’m a mermaid”

he continues to stare at me
“you from the ocean?”
he says later
still so serious
not an interrogation but not quite not one either
“no i’m a swamp mermaid”
i explain
the difference between fresh water and salt water mermaids
he listens but doesn’t listen

“where’s your tail?”
“we’ve been over this”
“your legs turn into a tail when you’re wet” he recites
he had been listening when he wasn’t listening
i’ll have to quiz him about fresh and salt water at a later date

we talk about something else for a while
but when the spell is cast–
however it is cast–
it doesn’t break easily
he pauses–mid-sentence in that something-else talk that didn’t matter to either of us–
and he’s twice as serious,
some awe, too

“you magic?”
there’s a slight nod
he wouldn’t expect any other answer
from me, but then
there’s almost a frown
“you a witch?”
“no i’m a mermaid”
“you a mermaid?”
it’s his due diligence to double check
triple check
“yes i’m a mermaid”
