Regular Poem: Baby Names

“But why
would you name your kid
I’ve heard her wonder
and subsequently philosophize about
at length
on different occasions.
I tend
to agree–
but there are a lot of names
out there
that could potentially
a child–
What if Chance is unlucky?
What if he’s fat?
Or slim?
What if Tristan
is happy?
What if Christian
is an atheist?
What if Benjamin
is left-handed?
What if Hope
is pessimistic?
What if Stella
fails astronomy?

If I finally have a child
I will name him
and it will be just my luck
that obscure Old Testament names
will somehow suddenly be popular,
and there will be four
in his kindergarten class,
and they’ll have to distinguish him
from the rest
by calling him by his middle name,
which may or may not be
