Regular Poem: Thought Exercises

6 Apr

thought exercise will do:

multiplication tables;
how many times Paul says “may it never be”;
the Greek alphabet;
the trombone part in the trio of “Stars and Stripes Forever”;
tenets of Gothic literature;
the nitrogen cycle;
the organs of the human body, their functions and locations;
a word and as many of its synonyms and antonyms as I can recite;
cliches and catchphrases–

but also
things not so much
learned by rote:

how to maximize efficiency of car-radio presets;
what English would be like without pronouns;
Punnet squares, dichotmous keys;
analyzing blues structure of pop music;
a spreadsheet of expenses for vacations, sunk costs of living;
diagramming colloquial sentences;
songs with enough thematic or melodic similarities to make sensible medlies–

and of course
moral and philosophical quandaries:

predestination and free will;
a triune God;
a finite being in an infinite universe;
justification, sanctification, glorification;
obedience and sin and backsliding;
Ecclesiastes in general–

and I just–

do I ever think at all?
Or am I a
thought exercise
waiting to happen
to some unsuspecting dupe
fool enough to engage me?
