Regular Poem: Let’s talk together

21 Apr

Let’s talk together
and count how many words
it takes us to start
picking up phrases
from each other

until we speak the same
and people recognize it as

Let’s talk together
and incrementally
become one
in language,
assimilate interjections
and idioms

until our vernacular
and we giggle as we
realize it.

Let’s talk together.

This poem reminds me of when my sisters (who are identical twins) were babies. They “invented” a language to communicate with each other before they learned to speak English with everyone else. They would make each other laugh in their secret code, and the rest of us had no idea what was so funny. This lasted a few months and then they grew out of it…however, even before they started school they still used the odd word for certain things. I remind them of it now, but they don’t remember. Which is too bad.

I know several sets of identical twins, and they all have similar stories. Bizarre.
