Regular Poem: Baby Girl

2 Feb

Inside of me
one another
in some kind of personality cock-fighting arena
is an angry feminist
and an angry conservative
and a surly old drunk
and a prude
and a nympho
and a geeky fangirl
and a homecoming queen
and a moody intellectual
and a grammar nazi
and an experimental poet
and a Baptist
and an emotionless automaton
and a sociologist
and a badass
and a creampuff
and a diva
and a bookworm
and a counselor
and a bitch,

and somehow
they all coalesce
into these dimples
that make it impossible
for me to go anywhere
without people treating me like a fragile wisp
of Victorian womanhood
who needs
help airing up her tires and
driving directions in the snow.

Inside of me
fighting for dominance
is Lil Darlin’ vs. Ma’am
HBIC vs. I Just Work Here
Baby Girl vs. Ms.

And that’s ok.

So I’m going to let you carry that box
and get that coffee off the top shelf
and scrape my windshield
and tell me how to do this task I’ve been doing for years.

Because inside of me
Baby Girl
isn’t doing so hot in the ring
so she probably
needs all the help she can get.

I absolutely love this. What woman could not identify?
