Regular Poem: I rather like this fantasy

18 Apr

I rather like this fantasy
life you’ve made up for me
that exists in your mind
and takes a vacation past your lips
to visit me once in a while
and shows me its wonders
when you speak of me.

Maybe I’ll indulge with you
in this fantasy life
that exists in your mind
and let it transport me
to a place filled with
champagne and chandeliers and shalls (never wills)–
a place of glamour and gilt and gregariousness.

I probably went to Bryn Mawr
in this fantasy life.
And I probably majored in something sexy
like History with a minor in Gender Studies
or maybe something even sexier
like Physics and Opera Performance
or sexier still
English Literature and French
(oh wait–that’s real life. I get them confused
sometimes).

In this fantasy
life that should exist (but doesn’t)
I never mow the lawn
or drink beer in an American flag bikini from Wal Mart
or sit at home alone and watch TV shows I don’t particularly like
with absolutely no aim to analyze them.

I probably never cry, either.

I am glamorous and refined and gorgeous
in this fantasy life
and rich, indubitably.

Oh, for a thousand fantasy lives!

Meanwhile,
in real life,
here I am
in cheap cotton panties
on a second-hand divan
writing bad poetry.

Oddly enough I kind of liked it. I wish I could be this descriptive sometimes. I guess that’s where it pays to be an English major. 😉
