Regular Poem: Voice

4 Apr

I work with kids who have autism, and I’m pretty sure most of them hate the sound of my voice.  I wrote this double etheree for them.

Voice–
piercing,
distinct, crisp–
compels you to
shudder, grimace, thrust
your fingers into your
ears (impotent solution).
Always you look at me with such
uncomprehending revulsion that
I swallow my next sentence, embarrassed,
and it comes out mostly whisper, a breath,
yielding slightly to your will but still
focused and uncompromising
in intent–though soft for your
hypersensitive ears.
I’m disconcerted:
I thought I had
such a nice
alto
voice.
