Patty and Ellen’s Bad Romance

And now a short essay entitled “Patty and Ellen’s Bad Romance”
To Follow Episode 3.3

Patty and Ellen are a complicated pair and all that, and I guess I don’t understand what it would be like to be on either side of a botched contract hit, but they are just so twisted!

What is Patty up to with this whole Ellen obsession? Let’s psychoanalyze: She had an ambiguously bad childhood, then she had that mysteriously dead baby daughter, then she hired Ellen because she thought she could use her as a pawn, then she decided she liked her and that she was like a young Patty, then she tried to have her killed, then she was sad about trying to have her killed, then she knew the whole time that Ellen was spying on her, then Ellen held her hostage just to forgive her.

So, Patty is drawn to Ellen for vaguely maternal reasons, and she respects Ellen and perhaps finds her an intriguing project? Maybe she wants to mold her into being even more like her?

But what about Ellen? She has supportive but unexciting parents, and she wants to transcend their bourgeois lifestyle by being a big-city lawyer. Patty had been her idol, but then she was jaded by all of Patty’s murderous antics. But now, here she is back to Patty. Another recapper suggested that Ellen calls Patty at the end of this episode because she can’t escape her burning desire to know about the case. While I suppose that is a valid reading, I do not agree. Yes, Ellen escapes her family through work, but more than that, she is inextricably linked to Patty in a really intimate, really twisted way.

It wouldn’t matter what case either of them were working on, Ellen would’ve called Patty–notice she didn’t call Tom, whom she is much friendlier with–because she, for whatever reason, needs that connection with Patty. She’d been able to resist a Patty fix until she got with her blood family and saw how disconnected from them she truly was.

In conclusion, my prediction is that Patty and Ellen will be back together at least by the end of this season. They simply cannot stay away from each other.
